Paper Abstract Thermal plastic polyurethane (TPU) 7840 based on hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene was shown to be compatible with polypropylene. Polymeric blends derived from polypropylene (PP) and TPU 7840 in various ratios, having polar and non-polar characteristics, have been made. The resulting pellets were injection molded and tested for their tensile, flexural, heat distortion temperature (HDT), and impact properties. Each composition possessed unique morphology demonstrated by either AFM (atomic force microscopy) or TEM (transmission electron microscopy). Compounded pellets having 60/40 ratio of PP/7840 TPU composition showed nearly co-continuous phase morphology. The extruded film (PRO 11070) of this particular composition was used to evaluate its adhesion performance to other thermoplastic materials through compression molding. It was shown to have excellent adhesion to polyethylene (PE), oriented polypropylene (OPP) and polyester (PET) film as a result of interdiffusion or strong polar-polar interaction at the interface, and all the failures were cohesive. It had moderate adhesion to polycarbonate (PC) with cohesive failure as well. However, the film failed to establish any adhesion to PVC or PVDF film. |
