Paper Abstract Acrylate functional monomers and oligomers have been used as reactive diluents and modifiers for amine cured epoxy coatings for concrete including traffic striping and floor coatings. Acrylates are reactive with polyamine curing agents through Michael Addition polymerization. In addition to providing viscosity reduction for the epoxy resin in 100% solids coating systems, acrylate functional resins have been shown to speed the cure at ambient and low temperature cure conditions. This paper will discuss the wide variety of acrylate functional products available and the versatility they offer the formulator for enhanced performance. The effect of acrylate monomer and oligomer structure, functionality and molecular weight on cure kinetics and coating performance will be reviewed. Specific property enhancement beyond fast, low temperature cure includes reduction in amine blush, good mechanical properties, flexibility, exterior durability and adhesion. More specifically, the paper will discuss the proper selection of acrylate functional monomer and oligomers, and the proper selection of amine curing agents to achieve optimal coating performance . |
